The author is always the master of the title of a book , but even the most famous and brilliant authors do have confusion about making a proper decision about the title , like Shakespeare had it in `As You Like It ' When one goes through the contents of the book by Karen Ordahl Kupperman , `The Abandoned Colony ' it doesn 't look like the abanDONEd colony , it appears that the colony was DONE away with . Supporting

assumptions for the destruction and extermination of the inhabitants of Roanoke Island may be read in the later part of the essay . Suffice it is to say as for now , that the Roanoke saw the sad end of an era and people , before turning the next page of its history . So , the title of the book should have been stronger

The author of this book is no ordinary personality . She is the Silver Professor of History at New York University . She is the award-winning author of Indians and English : Facing Off in Early America and Providence Island , 1630-1641 : The Other Puritan Colony

Initially the mission of the Englishmen was a trade expedition , and it had no political overtones or quests for territorial gains . At least it was `advertised ' thus ! An intelligent trader is twice-blessed (and most of the Englishmen are good traders , they work for their own profit and in the process the persons who enter into trade with them are also benefited . That is the strategy . When an individual or society stands to gain in terms of money , the profit-giver is welcomed with open arms . The same thing happened when in 1584 , 1585 and 1587 . Sir Walter Raleigh funded expeditions to Roanoke Island . The evidence of Englishman 's foresight and love for procedures was evident when on March 25 , 1584 Queen Elizabeth issued a charter allowing Sir Walter to discover search , find out and view such remote heathen and barbarous Lands Countries , and territories .to have , hold , occupy , and enjoy ' This was nothing but a free license given for aggression , to loot and plunder the locals as per demand of the situation and time

Raleigh did not lead the expedition he was only a businessman with the avowed aim of annexing territories for his country for economic and political gains . Once he had the license (charter ) in his hand , he sent his trusted men , Philip Amadas 's and Arthur Barlowe 's commands . They arrived in strength in two ships . They began their journey on April 27 1584 and landed on the coast of North Carolina on July 13 , 1584 . The English flag unfurled for the first time in the New World
