The 1995 adaptation , both written by director Loncraine and actor Sir Ian McKellen , has produced a modern and recognizable text that is faithful to Shakespeare 's . Loncraine , who has little interest in theatre , was then able to create a unique film which was taken in more than forty locations in to capture the authentic buildings appropriate for that period . The major settings were St . Pancras Station , Brighton Pavilion for the royal country retreat , a 1920s power station for the battle scenes , Victorian gothic for King Edward , St Pancras Chambers , the Senate House , and others . The colors that are warm and opulent and textures of the old guard were considered to show an austere environment . The scenes were relocated and used several cinematic adaptations such as a party in the beginning of the film Loncraine made the acting very real and the imagery so unreal to make it appealing to the audience ADDIN EN .CITE 2Richard III200815 May1995Mayfair Entertainment International Ltd .http /www .r3 .org /onstage /FILM notes1a .html20 December 1995 "Richard III " 1995
