Today there is more than one way of broadcasting information and this idea will be put to the test by examining how the world got to know of a particular historical event through the world-wide-web , Television , and various other media

This will examine how the world got hold of the Abu Ghraib scandal where United States soldiers tortured detainees in an Iraqi prison . This can be done by looking at how details of the scandal were being made public using alternative and mainstream media . A casual glance of the two major forms of information dissemination may not be enough to differentiate one from the other . There may be nothing that can be used to separate the two but upon closer inspection one will find that there is indeed a difference in terms of format , methodology and objective . For this study the proponent will use a timeline in to understand the evolution of the said scandal and how the public got different perspectives from both mainstream and alternative media sources

Background

What will be thoroughly discussed in the following pages is the Abu Ghraib scandal . In the middle part of 2003 the United States Armed Forces was able to secure a prison facility in Iraq a few miles from Baghdad - Saddam Hussein 's former seat of power . So even before the scandal , the Abu Ghraib prison already had a reputation for being a place of cruelty , torture , humiliation , random , and perverse interrogation techniques . Even with such a grim background the coming of the U .S . forces signalled the return to sanity , and justice . But in just a few months after American soldiers took control of the facility the only thing that was changed was the physical aspect , the prison was cleaned-up and a new uniform was seen patrolling the vicinity but the same spirit of torture remains within these walls . And when graphic images of men forced into humiliating position was released to the public , the whole world was shocked
