Response on an Article Upon reading this article , I realized that there are situations where the old way is still the best way ' This is in relation to what the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education did to the Mathematics curriculum of the area . With the growing number of technological advancements within our reach , it is not surprising that it will be associated with the way subjects are taught in the schools However , it doesn 't apply on all subjects , since there are matters which are better left to be

The Los Angeles Systematic Initiative or LASI introduced a different curriculum to the students , wherein they were allowed to use calculators even at an early age . The drawback of this action was that the students became very dependent on these technological tools ' that they cannot do simple multiplication on their own . The implication of this is that these students became less competitive as compared to those who know how to use compute on their own . As a consequence , they trailed on standardized tests to measure their abilities . It seems as if the introduction of a tool in the form of a calculator has hindered them from fully learning the essentials of mathematics
The outcome of the Los Angeles Systematic Initiative was not that successful in the case of Mathematics . It backfired when they emphasized on using calculators in such a young age . These students didn 't develop the same attitude towards math as those who were taught the basics of the subjects . As a consequence , the futures of these students are affected . Other students have the edge over them in terms of engineering and physics , wherein thy were able to get some backgrounds on math when they were young
