Perhaps he knew that only too well , enigma begets more attraction . But why would readers search him only through his literary work , when there are other sources , like his personal letters or interviews , where there is scope to meet him in his backyard and sketch the real Hemingway ? Thus this explores some of his letters towards creating a personal sketch of the man who bade farewell to arms after receiving 200 splinter injuries or was drown in the sea of platonic love at 50 , or suggested his fifth wife to cool her heels in some cool place while he finishes his Old Man And The Sea

Shortly before he committed suicide , Edward Stafford could interview Hemingway , which he eventually gave to Writer 's Digest in 1964 . Though he was not at his best , yet , the sharp wit never lost its sting , as even then he didn 't spare a chance to take a dig at William Faulkner , his archrival "Is it true that you take a pitcher of martinis up into the tower every morning when you go up to write " Asked Edward 's wife to Hemingway "Have you ever heard of anyone who drank while he worked ? He does sometimes - and I can tell right in the middle of a page when he 's had his first one " pat came the reply from the master "How long can you actually be productive on a daily basis " Edward asked "That 's something you have to learn about yourself . The important thing is to work every day . I work from about seven until about noon . Then I go fishing or swimming , or whatever I want . The best way is always to stop when you are going good . If you do that you 'll never be stuck . And don 't think or worry about it until you start to write again the next day .
