Research proposal in Nursing the Radiotherapy Patient

Proton Therapy in Nursing a Radiotherapy Patient

Chapter 1 : Introduction

Problem Statement

Proton Therapy is a kind of treatment that employs the use of a beam of protons for irradiating a tumor site for the cure of acute conditions such as cancer . It functions by minimizing damages to the body tissues with enfolding organs and is considered to be highly successful because of its ability to act without developing extensive side effects . This is therefore meant to make an overview on how the proton therapy is able to target and kill

tumors effectively especially those deeply held within the body tissues and those near the surface . This kind of therapy is therefore used in situations where the regular X-Ray Radiotherapy would not successfully safeguard sensitive radio-active tissues in the body of the patient . For this reason , it is important that pediatric patients who experience secondary tumors after undergoing treatment as side effects (Lomax , Pedroni , Rutz Goitein , 14-20

History of proton therapy

Proton therapy was first developed by physicist Robert Wilson who was recognized as the `father of proton therapy ' by many people . In 1946 Robert proposed the use of protons in cancer treatment as a definitive improvement on the photon therapy . Wilson anticipated the application of nuclear physics to human health necessities and utilizes the technology to treat the huge number of patients with this problem . Since then there has been increased interest from other researchers who are currently investing their time , resources and efforts to see to it that proton therapy is used for treatment in future (Lomax , Pedroni , Rutz Goitein , 147-152

Objectives of the research

The research is meant to measure the effects of Proton Therapy on the nursing of the Radiotherapy patient in this case we find that today in the medical field , there are many methods of treating cancer including radiation therapy and surgical resection . The main option that many people are not aware is the proton therapy and the major reason for this is the lack of facilities to provide the effectiveness for this option However , this extensive and ongoing research is providing evidence for long term success for the use of proton beam therapy as a form of treatment . Although proton therapy has existed for a long time , it has not swept the world of cancer treatment like the photon therapy or X-rays and this can be attributed research and cost . Its effectiveness has been experimented in many physics labs but it has experienced one major setback-fund (Sullivan and Decker , 1997

Chapter 2 : Literature Review

Proton Beam Therapy in medical perspective is defined as an external beam therapy which utilizes proton knowledge instead of photons popularly known as X-rays . In this therapy , the positive charge of the proton whose mass is almost 1 ,800 times the mass of an electron is released as a dose of radiation to the tumor side making it is easier to control the placement of the equipment for the patient during the treatment . A complicated software algorithm is...
