Research paragraph 1 February 2008 Currently Virginia 's job market is not very attractive for new entrants to the job market . The recently announced increases in unemployment in the state , particularly in sectors such as leisure , hospitality and construction would have repercussive effects on job seekers . According to Blackwell (2008 ) in November the unemployment rate has increased by .1 , up from 2 .9 in October . The prospect of finding employment will therefore be considerably difficult , though not impossible . With corresponding increases in employment in the areas of government private education , healthcare

, trade and transportation , new job seekers do not have to be completely dismayed . In fact an increase in unemployment does not necessarily mean that job seekers have less opportunity to find employment . On the other hand these job seekers need , instead , to ensure that they possess relevant skills which are invaluable to the sectors in which they are seeking employment . Of course because of fierce competition from other potential employees job seekers need to ensure that they are ahead of the game in terms of qualifications , experience and skills . With Virginia experiencing the eighth lowest employment rate nationwide , potential employees should adopt aggressive strategies when they are seeking employment

February 2008
With the rapidly increasing trends of globalization , corporations cannot afford to have an inefficient or ineffective labor force . It is absolutely essential that employees seek to develop and improve their skills in the workplace so that they can contribute to enhancing the product offered by their organization . It is the efficiency and effectiveness of a corporation 's human resource that often determines success . However employers are noticing that qualified applicants for new positions are deficient in basic skills essential to successful performance on the job . In a study among employers Casner-Lotto and Barrington (2006 ) discover that approximately 30 of employers believe that graduates with four-year college diplomas are `deficient ' in written communication skills . Such trends are worrying given the vulnerability of job positions in the face of increased competition for employment . Employers want to hire the best possible candidate for jobs and that is why more and more businesses are increasing the minimum qualifications for employment . In the previously mentioned survey employers are reporting that over the next five years they will increase the numbers of two and four year college graduates they hire while decreasing the number of employees with only a high school diploma . In this same way potential , new and existing employees need also to raise their standards by ensuring that they come to and stay well equipped for the 21st century job . Employees must therefore ensure that they are competent in oral communication , collaboration , professionalism critical thinking and written communication skills , which are the five most important skills to successful job performance
