Race and Ethnicity on American Politics (Research Proposal

Part 1 : Introduction

Racial discrimination and social inequality is a worldwide social illness . This especially happens in highly developed countries that have capabilities of granting the needs of numerous immigrants from other countries . However , the provision of being highly developed is also a way by which countries become highly diverse in population and culture Mainly , this is also the reason why there exists too much discrimination in the said type of societies

In this regard , the American society is among the focus of

the discussion of such issues . To be able to understand the impact of the said issue towards the society , two major public policies shall be examined in support of the said issue . The policies to be tackled in this would be pertaining to the Criminal Justice Policy and Immigration Naturalization Policy . Using the events that govern the said policies , this shall introduce the issues that govern the race and ethnicity issues of the American government and politics

To be able to understand the whole context of the being discussed , a certain claim on the political situation of the American society shall be discussed . The truth behind Higham 's claim : The persistence of racial inequality in a democratic society may be the gravest problem confronting the United States . Are racial and ethnic issues really plaguing the American Society ? If so , why ? What do the political policies play on these issues so far ? These questions and more shall be discussed in the paragraphs that follow

PART 2 : Literature Review

What is Racial and Ethnic Discrimination

IN 1955 , a visitor to Angola , then a Portuguese colony was surprised to realize that , as a white , he had suddenly become an aristocrat ! In shops , offices , and other public places , he was given preferential treatment ahead of waiting blacks . This was a common experience in many African countries only two decades ago . Then , in the 1960 's , in country after country where whites were a small minority , blacks assumed power In South Africa , however , there were millions of whites with a firm grip on the reins of government and economy who , for many decades , had believed that it was God 's will for them to rule . How did this situation arise

In 1652 , the first white settlers , Dutchmen , landed at the Cape . When they met the Hottentots and the Bushmen , local inhabitants wearing skins , the whites felt superior because of their advanced culture . Soon friction arose . When white farmers settled on native hunting grounds the Bushmen became angry and reacted by stealing cattle . The little men were hunted down like animals , leading to their shameful near extermination in the 19th century . The Hottentots were subjugated , their numbers were drastically reduced by smallpox , and the few that remained were absorbed into other races

It was in the 18th century that white farmers (Boers ) met up with the Xhosa nation - part of a black wave of immigrants from the north . Again there was friction...
