Characterisation
The beginning of the film strongly suggests representations of the lower class . The main character , Joe Lampton (played by Laurence Harvey ) is depicted sitting comfortably on a train , with his feet raised on the opposite seat , thus showing his mended socks . The introduction alone shows the man 's class standing , as he cannot afford to buy a new pair of socks , and resorts instead to wearing an old and tottered pair .
