Replication and Extension of the Continuity and discontinuity of Self Scale.
Running Head : SELF SCALE Critique of Secrest Zeller 's Replication and extension of the continuity and discontinuity of self scale FirstName LastName Association /School Critique of Secrest Zeller 's Replication and extension of the continuity and discontinuity of self scale (1 ) An article abstract should provide potential reader 's with a summary of the article which includes the thesis and major points made in the work . Janet Secrest and Richard Zeller 's article Replication and Extension of the Continuity and Discontinuity of Self Scale provides most of

the information necessary to allow the reader to understand what is presented in the article however , it seemed that at least two major factors were omitted from the purpose ' section of the article 's abstract . First , the abstract does not mention the state of the patients in conjunction with this study however , in the article 's second paragraph it is established that these are patients whose life and death issues of the stroke have been managed (Secrest , J Zeller , R , 2006 . This is a major point , and a potential reader might assume the patient-base for this study to be any or all victims who survived a stroke . The second major point missing from the abstract is the mention of the role played by caregivers in the recovery of the stroke patient . The article points out that Nurses ' contributions to the care of stroke survivors [ .] are often obscured by the concrete discrete functions of other rehabilitation team members [ . and that this] blurring of nurses ' roles leads to an assumption that nurses are merely supportive of other providers with no independent contributions to make [ . and o]utcome measures sensitive to the more holistic role of nurses in rehabilitation are missing (Kierkevold , 1997 qtd . in Secrest , J Zeller , R , 2006 Secrest , J Zeller , R , 2006
(2 ) Janet Secrest and Richard Zeller 's article Replication and Extension of the Continuity and Discontinuity of Self Scale ' does justify the need for conducting the research project , but at the same time , it reveals areas relevant to their research that remain unknown For example , as defined by the authors , The purpose of [the] study [ .] was to replicate and extend the development and testing of the Continuity and Discontinuity of Self Scale (CDSS however , the relationship between depression and continuity /discontinuity has not been established , and the authors state , Future research is needed on interventions to strengthen stroke survivors ' sense of continuity and to mitigate their sense of discontinuity (Secrest , J Zeller , R 2006 . While it is obvious that the work done by Secrest and Zeller is relevant , it may be that until the unknown factors are determined , their attempts at a concrete conclusion may be prohibited
The pertinent terms within the project include continuity ' which was operationally defined discontinuity ' which was operationally defined instrument ' which was operationally defined three-point response set ' which was operationally defined Barthel Index ' which was designated as reliable and valid but was not operationally defined prestroke Cantril Ladder ' which was not operationally defined Chronbach 's alpha reliability ' which was not operationally defined and QoL ' which was not operationally defined . In defense of the author 's it could be reasonably assumed that their audience - readers of the Journal of Nursing Scholarship would be familiar with the undefined terms and that including their definitions might prove tedious
The article Replication and Extension of the Continuity and Discontinuity of Self Scale ' does provide an indication of limitation and /or assumptions . The authors note that
?18 years of age was recruited through an inpatient rehabilitation hospital [ however ,] participants were not recruited from the stroke support group or from community contacts . Exclusion criteria included significant comorbidities such as AIDS , liver failure , and metastatic disease . In the original study some participants lived at home . In the current study , all participants were inpatients at a rehabilitation facility (Secrest , J Zeller , R , 2006
(3 ) Vulnerable populations were not used within this study if one discounts a recovering stroke patient as vulnerable . As stated above exclusion criteria was applied , and participants in the current Secrest Zeller (2006 ) study might be considered contained within a controlled environment as inpatients at a rehabilitation facility Reference
