Definition of Leadership 2006 Throughout my life I have had the privilege of working for and with good leaders , as well as the unpleasant duty to work for less qualified leaders . The difference is amazing . A good leader can accomplish much more than a poor leader using the same resources and the same people . I have come to the conclusion that being a good leader is a very difficult , but worthwhile goal "The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary lists three definitions for the word "leadership the office or position of a leader p

capacity to lead
the act or instance of leading
of these definitions provides much insight into what leadership is That 's not particularly surprising "leadership " is a very complicated concept . It involves the personality of both the leader and the followers , the process of achieving a goal , and the result of the process
I believe there are more bad leaders than good . Many people seem to believe that leadership comes automatically with authority and higher rank . I don 't believe this is an accurate interpretation of leadership Many of the bad leaders I have seen seem to have this attitude and merely demand his subordinates do something rather than facilitating their performance . This leads to frustration on everyone 's part that may be avoided if a person in a position of authority takes the time to learn the skills to provide true leadership to employees and co-workers
I believe that a good leader is made , not born . A man may be trained to become a good leader . He can learn the skills and develop the habits to provide true leadership to employees and co-workers . He can be trained to inspire others to follow him and want to do their best
Leadership involves the personality of the leader , the follower (s ) and the process that leads from the starting point to the goal . A good leader loves the process of achieving his goal and he will project that feeling onto those he is leading . A good leader has a positive interest in both the people he leads and the goal he is leading them to . A good leader acts with integrity and strength of character . He inspires his followers , not by meaningless pep rally speeches nor with anger and abuse , but by enabling his subordinates to succeed . A leader strengthens his subordinates through encouragement , education , and incentive
A good leader will constantly seek to improve his leadership abilities by asking himself questions
Am I working in such a way that my subordinates want to follow me
Am I a positive example to my subordinates with my behavior
Do I treat my subordinates with courtesy and respect
Do I develop my subordinates by training them properly and then give them the opportunity to do the job I 've trained them for
Do I keep my eye on the big picture and let my subordinates do their job without micromanaging their every task
A good leader will answer all of these questions...
