Abstract

Recycling is the reprocessing of wastes into more useful materials . The recycling process involves sorting and collection , manufacturing or the use of waste materials in production of materials . Recycling helps address the problems on waste reduction , conservation of raw materials savings on energy consumption , and environmental benefits

. Some people however , do not practice it since they lack the proper knowledge or facilities for it while others think it more expensive . However considering all the constraints as well as the benefits of such practice , the benefits of recycling in the short-term or long-term outweighs the disadvantages

Introduction

There are a variety of environmental issues that affects the world today . Among these issues are climate change , global warming deforestation , acid rain , air pollution , water pollution , ozone depletion and waste management and disposal . There is a need to address this clear and imminent phenomenon . Various waste disposal and management are being practiced such as landfills , incineration and recycling

A landfill is a big area where wastes or garbage will be dumped and filled with soil then undergo waste degradation . This practice would require a great land area for dumping of wastes and if the amount of wastes generated would build up there might not be any more land available for that purpose . Also , there is a danger of contamination of groundwater as the leachate from the wastes might mix in with the groundwater

Incineration plants also help in solving the issue on waste management However , incineration plants require very high energy to incinerate and combust waste materials . Also , the smoke emissions from these incineration plants would also greatly contribute to air pollution

To help alleviate the problem on waste management without the disadvantages of the first two methods , recycling may be practiced

Basic Facts on Recycling

Recycling is essentially the processing of waste materials so that it may be used again . New materials are being produced from materials that are already classified as waste . According to an article in Wikipedia (2008 , recycling is defined as reprocessing of old materials into new products , with the aim of preventing the waste of potentially useful materials

The process of recycling may be divided into three steps . First is the Collection and Processing of Wastes . Waste materials are collected from the community , cleaned and sorted out . In some areas , containers are placed on curbsides for people to put in their recyclable wastes . These are then collected and delivered to the recycling facility . There are also drop-off centers for people to place in their recyclable refuse Other areas implement buy-back centers , wherein people will get paid from the wastes that they surrendered . Others implement deposit /refund programs . Soft drink bottles , for example , are charged with deposits upon buying , which may be refunded after the bottle is returned to the store
