In August of 2006 , a study conducted by Audra Gray and Deborah McCutchen was published through the Journal of Learning Disability . The focused of their study was to evaluate the significance of phonological information usage amongst young readers ' phonological awareness , memory and comprehension . They concluded that though phonology influences comprehension , its impact is quiet limited in the word reading and word-list memory activities They developed this conclusion through correlation testing of phonological awareness , phonological processing . Using the list memory and word reading tests , results show marginal correlation of both factors

in early readers in the 1st and 2nd grade levels . Using the study , school reading programs can identify more effectively the factors that affect basic reading skills such word identification and comprehension which can be used to develop appropriate learning interventions . This will also allow the identification phonological processing transitions between beginning and experienced readers
Gray and Audra 's study allow for opportunities in refining educational strategies at the grassroots level and earliest possible intervention for learning diss . At the same time , their study highlights the need to review presumption regarding learning , in particular reading , to respond more effectively to students ' needs . Moreover , the study challenges educators to develop tools that will resolve learning difficulties and support the development of skills and competencies . And since reading and comprehension are cornerstones of higher learning this concern should not just be conspired as valid but as a critical to the success of every reading and learning program
