claimed that America allows all citizens to be equal disregard their race , ethnicity , skin color or language . I think that the nation should strive to achieve this nice ideal , though I see that reality is still the other one - cruel and bitter for people whose skin isn 't white . The cold truth is that racial discrimination inflicts society . Actually , the film "A Raisin in the Sun " tells the story of such African American family who has to fight constantly to prove that there are equal and deserve better living . The film was firstly released in 1961 and was directed by Daniel Petrie who managed to achieve the desired outcome - he made people think of the problem and try to find solution . The film is a socially conscious melodrama based on the famous play of Lorraine Hansberry . The main parts are played by Claudia McNeil , Sidney Porter , Ruby Dee , and Diana Sand . Their play is real gold and during the film they manage to understand each other by means of only non-verbal communication : gestures and look . And I think that it is a sign of actors ' skillfulness : they managed to show the issue of racial discrimination . As it is mentioned above the film is a story about struggle of a common African American family . The main heroine - Lena Younger - is shown as a strong woman willing to remain proud and firm even in the most difficult situations . She had to raise her children alone on the South Side of Chicago because her husband died and she had nobody to rely on . In such a way the director wants to show the way of character formation of main heroes . Walter Lee , Lena 's son is surely a dreamer who is willing to so nothing and to have money . He always claims that the world provides him with few opportunities , though he deserves more from life . He is rather ambitious and intelligent , though he is often impulsive and inpatient . Ruth , Walter 's wife is laundry-woman trying to make ends and to raise her son . Ruth is emotionally strong women and , despite poverty and family misunderstanding , she tries to fight for her marriage and better life . It is her pragmatism that helps to survive . Beneatha is Lena 's younger daughter who is a college student . Being intellectual and clever young lady she is interested in identifying her cultural roots . She is not so conservative as Lena and her values and beliefs differs dramatically from mother 's . She is ready to struggle to prove that she is a well-educated doctor , not simply African American woman . Beneatha is encouraged by her friend...
