A radiographer or a `radiologic technologist ' is a healthcare professional skilled in taking X-ray images and performing other specialized imaging procedures (such as CT scans , MRI scans , nuclear medicine techniques and ultrasound . He /she is also concerned with protecting the patient from radiation , properly positioning the patient and the X-ray device during the procedure and processing the X-ray films . Before the procedure is conducted the radiographer explains the details of the procedure to the patient along with its benefits and risks . The patient can clear all their doubts abut the procedure so that they are more comfortable . The radiographer has to ask certain questions to the patient before the procedure such as details about allergy and pregnancy , to ensure safety . He /she is also aware of all the anatomic landmarks present in the body so that the patient and the X-ray device is positioned in such a way that images of optimum quality are obtained . The radiographer is also trained in administering the contrast medium that may be required before the imaging procedure to make the structures present within the body appear better on the X-ray film . After the X-ray film has been processed , the radiographer hands over the X-ray to the radiologist (physician specialized in radiology to interpret it . Radiographers could work in a hospital , an outpatient clinic or a rural healthcare facility . Other options available to radiographers later include further specialization in various fields of radiology , managing a radiology facility of a hospital , teaching , and implementation of new radiology techniques in a hospital .
