General Purpose : To inform

Specific Purpose : At the end of this speech , my audience should be able to define racism and understand its origin , its form and the effect it has on our society . They should also be able to understand why racism divides our society and how it demeans the value of man as an individual

Thesis : Racism in our society

Introduction

Attention Getter : why should the color of my skin make a difference ? Are all men not born

free and equal ? Why should a man discriminate against his fellow man because the other person comes from a specific origin or ethnicity ? Is it not the same red blood that flows in our veins

Relevance : Who here has at least a friend who is from a different origin or ethnicity ? My best friend is an African and I cherish our friendship He makes me understand that there are other ways of viewing an issue . We do not only do the right thing when we do not discriminate against them we are promoting unity in diversity

Credibility : Scholars and critics have claimed that the origin of racism in our nation can be traced to some words from the Declaration of Independence . This is dated as far back as 1776 when America was formed

Thesis Racism is not just an issue that is morally questionable , it has been the cause of division and violence in our nation

Preview : My speech today will be focused on racism and the general issues it raises . I will speak about its origin and its variations . I will also discuss the effect racism has had on the growth of our country and how you and I can make a change

What is Racism

According to the Microsoft Encarta dictionary , racism is the act of making the race or origin of other people a factor in our behavior and attitude towards them . It involves discrimination towards a particular people because they are from another ethnic background or origin Oftentimes , we discriminate against other people because we have the belief that our own race is superior and that theirs is inferior

In America today , racism is not as common as it was in time past However there are still speaks of racism in our nation

After 40 year when Martin Luther King was assassinated , men still discriminate against themselves . I ask you where is the dream ? Do we judge men not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character

If you are saying to yourself I am definitely not a racist , I pose this question to you have you ever referred to some set of people as blacks , whites or do you remember not wanting to play with or sit next to that student in class because she is always wearing funny looking Indian dresses . Have you ever laughed at or discriminated against someone because of their accent or their linguistic background ? Such words or actions have their origin in racism

How does racism affect our school

It makes students that come from a different ethnic background or that speak a different language participates less in school activities

The gifts and potentials of students who are from these other ethic background are not recognized and maximized

These students have low self-esteem as they see themselves as different from everybody

These students suffer from feelings of depression and loneliness , they therefore withdraw from people

How does racism affect our society

Racially segregated people tend to reject their culture and parental values

They may also be unwilling to speak their native language because they don 't want to be mocked

These people are often struggle with their personal identity

IV How does it affect student 's behavior

Such students are usually silent and do not participate in class

They might not be able to fully concentrate in class and sometimes skip classes

These students are also prone to disruptive behaviors . They are more aggressive and take offences easily

Transition : We should realize that these students are men like ourselves . They are not different from them and so they should also be treated with utmost respect

Conclusion

Summary : The question here is what can be done about this ? It starts with you and me making a decision

Reinforce Thesis The next time you come in contact with someone form a different ethnic background , take it upon yourself to say hello and smile at such a person . By doing this , you are not only doing the right thing but also helping someone feel accepted . We should understand that they also have a role to play in our society . Although we come from a different background , we are all men born the same way
