Introduction

The issue of human rights is one that , for all of the advances in technology and the general increase in the standard of living for most people of the world , would automatically be assumed to be one which would be seeing more favorable results in regard to protecting those who are most vulnerable in society . However , the truth indicates something quite to the contrary , as the violation of the rights of many people especially minorities such as blacks , is not only

alive and well but is increasing with time . With the proliferation of illegal drug activity in America in recent years , there is an alarming trend of black drug offenders being denied their basic human rights under the claim on the part of the American justice system that the best interests of society would be served by incarcerating these individuals , although there is evidence to suggest that there is a disproportionate number of blacks versus whites being sent to prison for the same , as well as lesser offenses . In this research , the relationship between racially driven prison sentences , illegal drug activity in America and the overriding issue of human rights will be discussed in an effort to better understand all of these factors and how they interact .
