Philadelphia is a city famous for its African American heritage . During the 18th century , this city was considered to be the center of the abolitionists , and it had the biggest free population of the Blacks in the United States . The very first revolt against the bondage of slavery happened in this very city . Thus , it is considered as a historical landmark for many . The presence of the Black people can

be felt almost everywhere in the city as evidenced by the museums filled with the history and celebration of life and the Philadelphia Tribune which is the oldest African American news . Prior to 1884 , when the news was founded , only few people can read and write because they were forbidden to do so . The 125th anniversary of the is another reminder of the victory that this community experienced as a race (McCullough , 2009 . Today , studies show that almost half of the city 's population consists of African Americans .
