The story A Rose for Emily ' by William Faulkner begins at the funeral of Miss Emily , the main character of the story . The whole town had turned up for the funeral with the men paying their last respects and the women curious about her , especially since she is only survived by an old man-servant

The author then takes the reader back to the days when Miss Emily was younger . As a young woman , her father would discourage all

of her suitors , preventing her from having a relationship . After her father died , she became involved with a Yankee by the name of Homer Barron This affair cause a lot of gossip to circulate around the town that Miss Emily lived . After a while , Homer Baron was no longer seen by the townspeople and rumors about their affair ceased with the townspeople concluding that they had wed

Going back into the present setting , the townspeople had already buried Miss Emily . It was then that they realized that there was one room in Miss Emily 's estate that remained closed . Curious , they went to explore the room . They were greeted with an extremely dusty room that resembled that belonging to that of a bride and to their horror , they discovered the remains of a man in the position as if embracing something or someone . The story ends with the townspeople discovering the pillow beside the remains of the man showed signs as if someone slept in it and a long strand of gray hair left on it

The story of A Rose for Emily ' shows how isolation brought about by various events in one 's life can affect a person mentally . As a socialite , Miss Emily was ostracized by the townspeople because of her status and would constantly find ways to make her more human in their eyes by pitying her . This was exemplified when they celebrated the fact that Miss Emily 's father had passed away since they now had a concrete reason to feel sorry for her . When she bought arsenic , the possibility of her attempting to commit suicide thrilled the townspeople even more Because of this , Miss Emily became confined to her own home and would make an effort not to leave her house unless she needs to

Her father isolated her by discouraging all of her suitors from pursuing her . By doing so , he deprived her from creating relationships that would have otherwise been fulfilling . This also made her believe that without her father , she could not be able to stand on her own When her father died , it was this belief that made her prolong his burial by claiming that he was alive . She became more withdrawn and as a result , began to forego routine tasks such as cleaning the house
