The Effect of Salt on Water

The most common feature of naturally occurring table ' salt , NaCl , is its reaction upon water . Salt is highly soluble in water , and will effectively melt ice at temperatures just below the normal freezing point (32F . It will melt ice all the way down to -6F , but this requires a very large concentration of salt . When salt is placed on ice an endothermic reaction ' occurs , meaning heat is retained , and therefore the freezing point of the water

is raised (Salt Institute This ability of common salt to melt ice is the foundation of a in a very large industry supplying salt for de-icing roads , driveways and sidewalks . The ease with which salt dissolves in water provides other interesting effects as well . Anyone swimming in the ocean will notice more buoyancy in the salt water than in fresh water . Anyone swimming in the Great Salt Lake or Salton Sea will notice the odd , albeit pleasant sensation of being suspended in the brine , unable to sink Unfortunately , there are some unpleasant effects of salt as well . Anyone who has spread salt on ice without gloves faces the prospect of the salt drying out the skin . In contact with a flesh wound salt will cause intense pain . Additionally , salt has been implicated in a variety of health diss , and many heart healthy ' diets include salt restrictions . Salt is necessary for life , and it is not a hazardous substance ' but like many chemicals in our daily life , moderation of use is imperative , and excessive consumption is not recommended Works Cited
