REIKI REIKI DEFINED Reiki is a medical healing system that utilizes life-force energy . The name itself , Reiki , was derived from rei , meaning spiritual wisdom , and ki , or energy . HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF REIKI
The system of energy healing was developed in Japan in the early 1900 's by Mikao Usui , a physician-monk who strongly followed the Tibetan sutras or Buddhist texts . He initially named the technique as Usui Reiki Ryoho , which literally translates as the Usui methods of spiritual healing . In the late 1930 's , the system was introduced to the Western world by one of Usui 's students , Hawayo Takata , and the system was later conveniently called Reiki . Consequently , the system generated several versions that each had minor modifications of the original Usui healing system
Reiki is frequently mistaken as one of two other healing systems Johrei , founded also in Japan by Usui 's colleague , Morichi Okada , is more of a spiritual development than what Reiki teaches of spiritual healing . It also focuses primarily on finding happiness than to achieve healing . Reiki is also distinct from therapeutic touch , which was developed in 1972 by Dolores Krieger and Dora Kunz .
