The case study is regarding a company owning a division producing industrial chemicals and specialty chemicals . The sales and marketing department of the division stated that they plan to develop a new distribution center in the Northeast region of the population to gain advantage of the more densely populated area . However , the plan was obstructed by cost factors . Two previous studies indicated that the sum of the construction costs , operation costs and transportation costs will be larger than the presumable profit resulted from the investment
In effort of finding new alternatives to get a piece of the new market potential , a new plan was formulated . Instead of building a distribution center in the Northeast region , conditions indicated that it would be sounder for the company to build an in-land facility that will function as a connector to the Northeast market . The location is in the city not yet in the middle of the Northeast region , but it is closer to the company 's existing distribution center . The city is facilitated with transportation infrastructures that enable easier distribution from existing distribution center .
