Pythagoras
Pythagoras Pythagoras was one of the most respected Greek mathematicians and philosopher however , some of his ideas and teachings are very controversial . He walked the earth between 570BC and 490BC . He was born at Samos in Ionia . His father was Mnesarchus , a merchant who hail from Tyre , while his mother was Pythaus , an indigene of Samos . His father helped the Samos people during famine , so he was been rewarded to have an automatic citizenship of Samos . His mother 's original name was Partheni , but after Pythagoras ' birth , his father changed his mother

's name to Pythaus , in honor of the god Apollo pythia . Pythagoras spent most of his early life in Samos : a Greek island in the eastern Aegean He had two mentors Creophilus and Pherecydes the Syrian . He left his hometown to go to Italy and some other countries in to escape the tormenting government of Polycrate . Due to his teacher 's advice that Egyptian priests were known for wisdom , he went to Egypt to take part in the priesthood practices , where he learnt most of the geometry applications and principles that he used in formulating his well-know theorem . In addition , he used the entire religious rite he has learnt in Egypt to establish his own religious school in Southern Italy (Tyson 2007
