1 ) Pygmalion myth originated from Ovid 's Metamorphoses . Pygmalion is actually a sculptor who made a sculpture of a woman and because he forms it perfectly , he eventually falls in love with her . Pygmalion offers gifts to his statue and he always prays to Aphrodite . Soon , Aphrodite has pity on him so she touches the statue and brings it to life . This statue is called Galatea , and the sculptor can experience heaven with his own creation Shaw accommodates the skeletal structure of the fantasy since a woman made from a raw material
was brought into existence which in turn has been a partner for him . Given that , Shaw did not permit the man to just fall in love with his creation . What Shaw did in to break the myth of Pygmalion is that he injects the play with variety of characters such as Mrs . Pearce and Pickering . He has done this to suggest that the Pygmalion is incomplete and not ideal as well . By doing that transformation of the Pygmalion myth he also look towards the calls into question the exaltation of the artist , and unveil the myths incompetence as well as the romances that leave out the daily aspects of human 's life
