Introduction

A fact known to all is that most of the literatures that are made are reflection of the humanistic side of its writer . Made by humans , they are endowed with the humanistic perspective and attributes of the logical reasoning and thinking . Thus , one of the major attribute of literatures is the religious perspective and opinion of its writer by which some differ against the other

Taking the American Literature as an example , its large collection of written stories and expositions are classified in to the different

br perspective in religion and logical reasoning . are divided with their opinions and perspective regarding the logical idea of the Supreme Being and the relation of humans with Him . By examination of the writer 's logical judgment and reasoning , literary works made during the period of 1700-1820 can be classified to either Puritan thinking or Deism

Puritan Thinking and 18th-Century Deist

Since the Colonial or Calvinist Period , human societies and cultures are deeply governed by the principles of religion and the Bible . People act and think in accordance to the church opinions affecting also their judgment and reasoning . Thus , most of the society 's reasons and ideas are incorporated with their religious attributes but of their orthodox belief in divine intervention and perpetual guidance . It is a widespread belief at this time that ever since God created humankind , they are always subjected to His will and that everything that happened is because of God 's will

These ideas are explicitly incorporated to the works of William Bradford , Mary Rowlandson and others . In Book I : Chapters IX and X of Of Plymouth Plantation by William

Bradford , the events that happened encompassed in their expedition are due to the providence and intervention by God like the event where they found corn and beans on their second expedition and their victory in defending their encampment against the Indians . Bradford believes that these all happened because God willed so to happen thus the credit and acknowledgement must rightly be given to Him . This is also the theme of Mary Rowlandson literary work of A Narrative Captivity and Restoration where she aimed to show the interrelation of her life 's trials to God 's plan

These themes and religious perspective differ to the subject of the American Literature during the period of 1700-1820 . During the 18th century , American societies saw a relation to the idea of logical reasoning and religious faith . The Enlightenment brought about the new complex principle of Deism where the belief of the creation of the whole universe by a Supreme Being or God is also inculcated but not like how the Puritans believe it . After creation , God did not get involved with the everyday life of the people thus humanity 's fate is solely depends unto their free will and judgment . This philosophy is embraced by most of the famous American leaders during the 18th century such as Thomas Jefferson , Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Payne
