Importance of Public Opinion in Society

The United States of America is a democratic country . This means that democracy is very important for the country . The voice of the people must be heard in the government and this is where public opinion is important . In the proponent 's view , public opinion is the pooled view of the American community . According to the University of California , San Diego , public opinion is the so-called by-the people ' view . Important indicators of public pinion include the content , stability , intensity

br and its direction . These indicators show what the American society wants , what the society expects from the government and lastly , what the public expects from the political leader . The opinion of the public is often derived from polling . Even though polling is the common way to determine public opinion , there are times that polls are not a very reliable source

Polls can be biased depending on the construction of the poll or the people chosen to answer the polls are chosen by the surveyor . It is important that the correct information is provided in polls because this represents what the public or the people of America wants . Polls are usually done on the internet , on a website , or in public places where people can provide surveys or questionnaires to determine what people think . Public opinion is not stable . The attitude of the public changes from time to time . The public may agree on a certain issue yesterday but in the future , the public may disagree on it . This is why it is necessary to conduct polls and surveys and to gauge public opinion from time to time

At present , there is a group in America that handles public opinion research . This group is called the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR . The association makes sure that the research results and activities to determine public opinion is not misrepresented (University of California , 2008 . The group believes in providing practices and standards that the polls can follow to determine public opinion . Aside from polls , public opinion is gauge through polls , random probability sampling , reading their mail , and listening to the interest groups . According to Democracy in America , public officials also use the same methods in to get the public opinion of society . However there are times that society may think little about the issue . If this happens , there are times that public officials will try to shape it by airing their views in pubic and leading their way in an issue . Public opinion is important to society because this would show the view of the majority . Society needs to know what most of its members think because the opinion of the majority can encourage the government officials to make good decisions .
