Freud accounted mind as composed of three different elements namely Id ego and super-ego . The id part has sexual drives for satisfaction super-ego comprises conscience mainly imparted by parents , and ego is the self-created conscious resulted from interactions between id and super-ego
Repression
Repression occur from a painful event that is not remembered but unconsciously it is still in mind and results in certain kind of fear that protects the person from some future threats
Freud defines unconsciousness as an event that cannot be brought back to the consciousness unless psychoanalysis is done
Repression evokes defense mechanism and results from repression of a bad event into unconsciousness . Though the experiences resulted from that event still remains in the mind of a person , he tends to forget about the event itself . Repression cannot be destroyed and is part of normal brain process . Though the painful event is not remembered but it still exists in our mind and still executes its consequences and can result in certain abnormal behavior . Analysis of dreams was also important part of Freud 's treatment process . He believed dreams to be the result of those events that are stored in our unconscious mind There is a normal level of repression and the one that results from a neurotic illness . Some abnormal neurotic attitudes result from repression in childhood
Psychoanalysis therapy involves relating the three elements of mind in a healthy relationship . According to him repressed events are buried in the unconscious mind . He used the method of curing by letting the patient to talk freely about the symptoms and events that occurred to him . Hence this way he would let his patients to dissipate those forces lied in his unconscious mind . The logic behind this free-talk is to neutralize patient 's super-ego and realize his own resistances during the process . In this method he lets all that is repressed in unconscious mind to filter out into conscious ego . He regards patient 's neurotic condition as a result of repressed events in the unconscious mind Occurrence of the resistance during this process is a normal thing and an indication of correct assessment of the condition
