An Examination of the Eclectic Biopsychosocial Approach Towards the Treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Dis Abstract Post-traumatic stress dis is a severe psychological impairment with far-reaching physiological , social and emotional consequences . PTSD not only affects cognitive skills as a result of suffering trauma , but also conversely affects behavioral patterns as well . In this way , PTSD creates a negative feedback loop that requires psychological therapy for recovery . Various forms of psychotherapy have been used to treat PTSD with focuses ranging from psychoanalysis , cognitive , behavior and biomedical therapy . Each method has shown a

certain level of efficacy but what is examined in this work is the effectiveness of an eclectic biopyschosocial approach in the treatment of PTSD . This approach takes into account not only PTSD 's various effects on the mind and body , but also the various psychological therapeutic means by which these effects can treated in harmony to achieve greater efficacy than stand alone therapy . Psychotherapy conducted with a humanistic approach is one such eclectic treatment , with an emphasis on the positive aspects of trauma such as emotional growth of the sufferer , rather than on treating the symptoms of trauma as traditional psychotherapy does . Another example of an eclectic treatment in the biopyschosocial approach is cognitive behavioral therapy that includes psychotherapy , such as prolonged exposure treatment . Such treatment emphasizes changing the emotional connection to a traumatic stress trigger , thereby altering affected behavior .
