Among other things , the brutality and inhuman treatment that occurred during this war has made many wonder if the war was actually fought by men - men like you and I . In summary , the motive of World War II was simple to make Germany powerful and one of the things that will make this happen was to considered a threat to the Germans

In the case that was given , David 's reply is explainable as I would like to believe that his view of the atrocities that these soldiers committed is based of a humanistic point of view and not a psychological point of view . In 1961 , after the World War was over and people were still trying to comprehend the brutality of the genocide , Stanley Milgram , a Psychologist in Yale University , started conducting a study that centered on the conflict between obedience to authority and personal conscience . The result of this test was that a substantial amount of people do what they are told to if they perceived that there is an authoritative backing for this action . What this means is that these Germans were actually not thinking but was acting under s - s from a malignant authority

The weakness I see in David 's argument is that he seems not to put in consideration that every society has evolved to have a form of hierarchy that has come to be known as the instituted authority . It then becomes natural for people who are born into this system to obey , probably because of fear of sanction in the case of disobedience or so that they would appear to be cooperative with the authority . Thus we should not base their actions on the premise that they are personally bad people and that they were following their conscience . What David does not understand is that these people might as well be acting as opposed to their sense of judgment or conscience . Often times than not , human beings under authority are unwilling to challenge their superiors , even if they abuse power

The truth is that even in the field of psychology , there has not been a universally accepted definition of the concept . While some see it from the view on mental alertness , others see it as something that has to do with skills .
