The sexual responses in humans consist of phases that indicate the different psychological and physiological changes that occur in the act of sexual intercourse leading to an orgasm . The sexual response cycle has been studied by numerous researchers , such as Helen Singer Kaplan who introduced three phases . His Triphasic Concept of human sexuality ' consists of three stages namely the desire , excitement and orgasm . According to another researcher , Lief maintains that there are actually five sexual phases including desire , arousal , vasocongestion orgasm and satisfaction

p A set of different researchers on the , namely William Masters and Virginia Johnson notable sex therapists believed that humans had only four sexual phases including the excitement , plateau , orgasm and resolution . Through the different advances in medical technology Masters and Johnson were able to measure changes in heart rate and muscle tension and the body changes to characterize each of the phases for both men and women

The first phase is excitement , which can last for several minutes to hours . For both men and women , visible signs of this excitement phase include an increasing level of muscle tension , a quickened heart rate flushed skin (or some blotches or redness may occur on the chest and back ) hardened nipples , and for men the erection of the penis ' because of the start of vasocongestion .
