As such , forensic psychologists can have many functions therein , especially with respect to the criminal justice system , from the initial stages to the end of the trial and even beyond , to the workings of the correctional system . They can provide essential links in criminal investigations through profiling and can aid in the resolution of extremely delicate hostage scenarios and other critical , tense situations . They are involved in the treatment and evaluation of criminals and accused individuals , drug users , juvenile delinquents , and can help in availing of alternative modes of dispute resolution (CISAT , 2003

For example , in the case of a prosecution for murder with the defendant raising the defense of insanity , forensic psychologists for both sided will testify as experts with respect to the truth or falsity of the defense based on the history of the defendant and the means by which he committed the crime . Or , even earlier , forensic psychologists can help determine whether or not an accused is competent to stand trial . Or even in civil cases , as when divorced parents are arguing over custody of their common children , forensic psychologists can help the court determine which parent is more fit to have custody considering the best interest and welfare of the children
