Creation of a data base is a significant facet of marketing as it provides business and customer details at a single point . Linking the same on the web is a powerful business tool which has provided unprecedented capability for managers to manage the data base in real time . Database has been defined as a collection of programs which stores all data systematically in the fields

Data base management systems being software programmes can be linked seamlessly to the web thereby providing facilities for real time customer relationship management

The Project entails development of a medium sized data processing system with web based reporting for access to and segmentation of marketing and customer contact information . This would envisage thus two significant parts , creation and management of a data base and then linking it with the web for real time access . Client management will also be a relevant aspect which has to be considered . The organization is matrix style and the client is an existing one with whom the organization has a standing contract . This Report has been prepared to provide an overview of the significant issues involved in management of a medium sized data base to the web

General Issues . The objective of the project is to provide the client an effective web based facility to access marketing and customer data The external environment is relatively favorable as the client is an old and established one . However the interaction of data with the system is likely to be highly dynamic as it will be real time . The web service provider will also be a part of the external environment . The internal environment is no less challenging as it entails setting up and managing a data base from the scratch which will have technological , leadership and team building challenges

Scope of the Project . The project essentially involves creating a relational data base and then linking it to the web . Relational data bases are those that normalize a data into tables for all requirements of the system . A key is used to link the information provided to all the fields in the data . This also enables linking and delinking of data smoothly throughout the system (RDBMS , 2006 . The management of user requests frees the user from the need for the system to know where the data is physically stored and hence eases the access of data by multiple users . A well managed data base will ensure security and integrity of data (Christiansen , 2005 . This is particularly challenging in the context of a web linked data base as the vulnerability of the same increases .
