There were critics who claimed that the director (Alan Parker ) needlessly distorted and manipulated the facts to give a cinematic hit . Based on the real life murder case of three civil rights workers in Neshoba County in 1964 , two FBI agents were sent to investigate the matter . p In the movie , it was implied that county officials (who were in real life were members of Ku Klux Klan ) were part of the murder . Two sheriffs were primarily involved and executed the killings . All throughout , the murder was premeditated . Before the volunteers have reached Mississippi the county sheriffs in Neshoba already knew about the whereabouts of the group . And from there , they have conspired to arrest the three students under the notion of arson and over speeding . Just days after the disappearance of the three , the FBI became involve in the case . There were two FBI agents (as played by Hackman and Dafoe in the movie ) that were mainly responsible for the uncovering of the events . Hackman and Dafoe 's characters were based on FBI agents John Proctor and Joseph Sullivan , respectively . Being a Southerner himself it was easier for Anderson to make his way through the tight-lipped residents of the County . Whereas for Ward , he acted upon the evidences that his partner has gathered . As a last resort , Anderson exerted his efforts and influence upon Mrs . Pell , who also wished revenge for the beatings imposed upon her by her Klan-connected husband , to solve the case
Based on data and facts , the storyline of the movie was very different from what really happened in Mississippi Burning . It was said many times that it was fictionalized by Parker to have a blockbuster . In the movie it was implied that White Americans were sought as a salvation of a forgotten ' place but there were also texts that says that de facto it was contrary to what they have portrayed in the movie
In view of what the Klan has done , it was not a mere crime that they have murdered the three students . It could be characterized as an act of terrorism . Terrorism in a way that they have brought forth terror not just to people outside from their town or people that they do not like but also to their townspeople as well (in the movie , this scenario is depicted by Mrs . Pell whose husband is a member of the Klan . He regularly beats her up because he thinks that being involved in such organization gives him power .
