Introduction

Educational expectations in our Latino community act against the development of the girl child 's education in that it prepares her for domestic roles rather than a career . From early childhood the girl child is discriminated against and the boy child favored when it comes to making decisions about where the child is going to school and for how long . In class , the teachers reinforce this bias unconsciously by paying more attention to the boys and disregarding the girl 's efforts to play a more proactive role in the class . By asking the boys harder questions aimed at encouraging them to think and work out the answers , teachers try to prepare them for an educational experience involving research and lots of studying . On the other hand they usually ask the girls simple questions and in most cases give them clues to the answers thus entrenching the perception that girls are unable to do well in academics (Chapman (2008
