Professor Questions Unit 2

Essay 1

Spring , summer , autumn and winter are the four seasons majority of the places on earth go through every year . There is a question which people find difficult to answer . What causes the earth 's climate changes ? There is a misleading belief that the changing distances of the sun from the earth bring about the seasons . This is not true . So what really causes these changes

There are many issues involved , but the leading cause maybe the relationship between earth and the sun .Three factors have

been explored

Changes in the inclination of the earth 's axis

Alterations in the shape of the earth 's orbit round the sun

Variations in how the tilt of the axis is oriented in relation to the orbit

If there was no tilt in the earth 's axis there would have been no seasons and day and night would have been the same length all year round

Seasons are therefore are a direct result of the earth 's tilted axis at about an angle of 23 .5 degrees . There is a difference of six months between the seasons of northern and southern hemisphere . At times of the year when the earth orbits the sun the north pole is `leaning ' towards the sun (this happens when there is winter in northern hemisphere

But seasons in northern hemisphere are completely opposite to those of in the northern hemisphere . People in the southern hemisphere experience summer when the hemisphere is tilted towards the sun at the time it is winter in northern hemisphere . Winter comes when the hemisphere is tilted away from the sun and northern hemisphere faces summer

Essay 2

What actually causes the moon phases ? Let 's try to explain this with the help of a diagram The diagram is quite easy to understand , sunlight as you can see is coming from the right . During the moons rotation round the earth its 8 crucial stages are shown . A point to be noted that exactly one half of the moon is always lit up by the sun , at times we are able to see both the illuminated and the shadowed portion ,this is what creates the various moon shapes . So it can be said that the lunar phases are a result of changing angles of the earth , the moon , the sun as the moon rotates round the sun

Essay 3

A lunar eclipse is an incidence that takes place when the moon comes in between the sun and the earth and the shadow of earth falls on the moon Lunar eclipse takes place only when the moon is full , this does not happen every month as the moon 's orbit is tilted 5 degrees more than the earth , so everything comes into the same line about two or four times an year

A solar eclipse tends to occur when the moon 's shadow falls on the earth . Solar eclipse can happen only on a new moon . As the moon 's orbit...
