A review of facts both in a brief history of doulas as well as the threats that may occur to the mother and child during birth will be presented . Doula as a practice was not professionalized until recently . In 1968 the American College of Doula-Midwives (ACNW ) was established and since its inception , doula has been witness to a resurgence of the field and practice (Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation . The Oklahoma Doula Practice Act establishes various restrictions of the practice of doula in Oklahoma . The act itself would further legitimize the practice of doula by enforcing laws and requiring certain restrictions in the state of Oklahoma .
