Round Robin Reading (RRR ) is a literacy practice that promotes oral reading . In this practice , students are asked to read aloud a longer passage from a text while other students keep silence and listen to that student . RRR is also known as `popcorn reading ' and `barbershop reading . All the students read aloud turn by turn (Durkin , 2004 Hoffman Rasinski , 2003 . The

Several scholars have studied the negative impact of Round Robin Reading on the students ' achievement and their behavior . Some researchers have found that Round Robin Reading is a highly ineffective way in which students practice to read . It is also found that Round Robin Reading results in the attitudinal problems as well as negative learning outcomes

Round Robin Reading is used as a tool to make students learn how to read . This practice is in use since several decades and it is still being used in a large number of elementary schools . It is becoming important to stop using Round `Robin Reading as an instructional strategy as several problems are found to be associated with it (Opitz Rasinski , 1998

Students should be given opportunity for self-correction when they are reading aloud . Round Robin Reading does not promote self correction habits in the reader when stumbling occurs while reading . Instead teachers correct the errors by themselves and do not let the students do struggles for making corrections . Sometimes , other students start correcting the errors of the reader before taking the reader opportunity to correct those errors by him /her (Friedland Truesdell , 2004 Students must be able to put their emphasis on the meaning of the text they are reading aloud . If students lose continuity in the meaning then they should be given some time to self-correct instead of pouring meaning on them

When a student reads a passage aloud , other students are supposed to read along . In this way , the listening and reading comprehension skills of students are polished and improved . But this is not found in the reality . As reading and listening comprehension skills go together , a student with poor listening comprehension skills will remain a poor reader

Time is wasted to a significant extent in Round Robin Reading in elementary schools . Insignificant amount of reading takes place in Round Robin Reading as only one student at a time is involved in reading aloud (Hoffman Rasinski , 2003 . Oral reading involves more time as compared to silence reading in which the reading of the same passage takes little time . A huge amount of time is wasted in Round Robin Reading by keeping students focused on the track .
