Problems and challenges of gifted children

A B S T RA C T

Schools are now too often organized by age and not by assessed talents and achievements . This may not be providing the equity of opportunity students require to meet the diverse and unique needs that would allow them to develop excellence . With needs that range far beyond the age-graded curriculum in which they are commonly placed , gifted students are among the most poorly served in the school population . Attempts are made to provide services for learners who meet grade level

expectations and many special provisions and services are available for learners who are slow or disabled , whether they are placed in mainstream classrooms or special programs . However , much of the educational community believes that the gifted among us should be able to succeed on their own and that no challenge is needed to aid in their growth . They possess social , emotional , and psychological characteristics that have been part of the research and they found out that the brighter the child , the more these characteristics influence the child 's behaviors For instance , children can exhibit characteristics such as interest in problem-solving , sensitivity , idealism and intensity . They are also highly verbal and show a conceptual fluidity and mastery . Some of these characteristics can be stumbling blocks too especially when their expectations are not met . These situations make them become dissatisfied with themselves too (Webb , 2006

Researches show that it is the responsibility of parents to study their gifted children and...
