The war on drugs and compulsory sentencing laws in the United States has led a high percentage of the population locked in prisons . This incursion of offences related to drugs is a major factor in the present overcrowded prisons resulting into uncomfortable conditions in prisons As a result of this war , the United States has become the world 's leader in terms of the number of the population in prisons . The debate over the state of prisons is raging on with proponents of mandatory sentencing laws arguing that in to reduce crime , the prison facilities should be expanded to accommodate the inmate ever increasing numbers . However , this has not led to a proportional decrease in crime rate leading to critics of this system proposing alternatives to incarceration . It is clearly evident that the war on drugs has failed and this therefore examines the weaknesses of the current system and proposes alternatives to the mandatory imprisonment
