Offences by man date back to the existence of the human race . The fundamental concept behind prisons is the rehabilitation and correction of the offender . The offences range from minor bailable ones , criminal unbailable to political offences . In prisons therefore , there exists a diverse range of incarcerated individuals ranging from remandees (of which 90 are usually innocent ) to the convicted criminals , political prisoners , prisoners of conscience , prisoners of war and enemies of the

state (White 2006

Characteristics of Prison staff that leads to the abuse of inmates

Inmates or prisoners are ordinary human beings who have been branded the internal name of prisoner for the virtual of incarceration . Their state inside prison denies them all the freedom and becomes subjected to the control of the prison guards

Just like the prisoner , the prison guard is subjected to a situation requiring necessary adaptation to be able to cope with an assigned role The role extends beyond the ethics of man and also what the prison staff initially predicted the situation would be . The earlier inherent behaviour of the prison guard is that one of a romantic relationship with every member of the community (White 2006

The conditions in the prison are such as the inmate does not have the rights to live which , to the human psychological behaviour , has negative side effects to the individual personal conducts . The environment inside prisons is one that traumatizes the exposed individuals . This has serious acculturated attributes to the prison officers . The environment is further worsened by the unsanitary conditions inside the prison

The guards are required to manipulate fear and boredom , powerlessness and unprivacy and direct them to the inmates . All these are of ethical concern and not inherent in the individual personalities . This complexity of situation makes the prison guards to be : -

Sadists

Disoriented

Un-personal

Non-individual

Reduction of Prison Violence

Ethically , the worst affected portion of prison inmates is the remanded prisoners . The greater percentage is genuinely innocent . Even to those in remand who have practically committed an offence they are innocent upto the time the judicial system proves them guilty . They are firstly therefore not liable to be abused . Most of the remandees go to prison for inability to raise bail bonds and should therefore be treated equally as their counterparts who afforded the bail bonds . The prison officials should therefore separate the remandees from the convicted inmates and let them enjoy the rights and privileges enjoyed by any other free citizen

The power of control of an individual should not entirely be left on the hands of another . Prison incarceration and imprisonment is not evil since wrongdoers continue to prevail

However , some rights , which are required to sustain life should not be denied to the inmates and be left on the hands of the prison guards The guards should only be empowered to deny the inmates leisurely and privileges which are not necessary significant to sustain life
