Introduction

A primate is a member of a group which includes species like lemurs monkeys and humans . Primates are not in one part of the world instead they are spread all throughout the world . Like every other species primates have been divided into classes too . The primates

include the following

Prosimians

Monkeys (Old world and new world

Apes

Humans

This will first discuss the primate in terms of its classification describing the animals and their features within the classification . A chart has also been drawn to further explain the concepts . Then it will go on to describe the different locomotion types and the associated muscular and skeletical modifications . A chart would be presented below to show the animals specific to the type of locomotion

Primate Taxonomy and Divisions

Classification of primates is done in to identify them to the group of animals one is referring to as well as to point out the evolutionary relationships among animals . Different have given a different to the classification of primates and this continues to vary with the publications over time . This will discuss the classification scheme adopted by Fleagle published in 1998 The reason behind choosing Fleagle 's scheme is based on the concise and relatively few subdivisions of the providing a concrete which makes it easier to remember . Before discussing the classification and various divisions of the primate , the following table will provide a helpful guide in identifying relationships between different classes

SUB INFRA SUPERFAMILY FAMILY SUBFAMILY

Prosomii (Prosomians ) Lemuriformes Lemuroidea Lemuridae (true lemurs )Lepilemuridae Cheirogaleidae (dwarf lemurs )Indriidae Daubentoniidae Lorisoidea Loridae Galagonidae Tarsiformes

Catarrhini (Old World monkeys

Apes and humans ) Cercopithecoidea (Old World monkeys ) Cercopithecidae Cercopithecinae Colobinae Hominoidea (apes and humans ) Hylobatidae Hominidae (hominids ) Ponginae Gorilliane Homininae (Kay , 1975

Sub

The two major subs comprising the primate are

Prosimii

Anthropoidea

Prosimians

The literal meaning of prosimians is `pre-monkey ' and they were the first in the sub to evolve therefore , they are called `lower primates (Wolfe , 1997

Lemuriformes

Included in the prosimian 's infra `Lemuriformes ' are the super families of lemurs , lorises and other related animals . Today , these are only found in the Old World . Lemurs are commonly found on Madagascar and Comro Islands . These species were very frightening and used to come out at night making horrifying noises . There are five family classifications of lemurs which still survive today . Species belonging to the family Lemuridae also called `true lemurs ' were the size of a cat ranging from small to large one . Physically they had long bushy tails which helped in climbing and balancing on trees . They had a strong sense of...
