This made him to be characterized as a genius by from different generations who read his written communications . This fame was attributed to various efforts he made after escaping as a slave . Douglass was born the slave of one Captain Aaron Anthony , a man of some consequence in eastern Maryland (Chesnutt , 2008 para 9 . His written communication road started when he was sent by his master to go and stay with master 's relative . This was a privilege as slave could not have been sent to live in the house his master 's relative , when he was ten years old . Many readers of Douglass work concur that he was a genius and possibly his orator career and leader which started when he asked his masters relative to teach him how to read and write making Mrs . Auld a relative of Douglass master became his teacher . Mrs . Auld was of a religious turn of mind and , from hearing her reading the Bible aloud frequently , curiosity prompted the boy to ask her to teach him to read . She complied , and found him an apt pupil , until her husband learned of her unlawful and dangerous conduct and put an end to the instruction (Chesnutt , 2008 para 23 . The broken law meant breaking a chain that had held a mind in bondage . At this point in time the young Douglass was already eager to learn . He realizing his master was against him acquiring knowledge as it was illegal for a slave to learn but his learning was facilitated by continuous breaking of the law by Mrs .
