Abstract

This aims to present the demographic transition and briefly discuss the relationship among demographic variables of randomly selected countries in Africa , America and Caribbean , Asia , Europe and Oceania . This found out that (1 ) countries in each geographical location are in different transition stages (2 ) there are more countries in Stages II and III , and fewer in Stages I and IV (3 ) high urbanization rates reduce birth rates as families utilize improved planning

methods , as female employment precedes childbearing role , and as industrialization needs fewer labor (4 ) birth rates determine the trend of infant mortality rates and (5 ) the countries have varying age-dependency ratios , but all are dominated by youth population Countries with very high or very low age-dependency ratios have challenges to face to attenuate the resulting economic effects

Population Geography and Demographic Transition

Introduction

This aims to present the demographic transition stages , and briefly discuss the relationship among demographic variables of randomly selected countries in Africa , America and Caribbean , Asia , Europe and Oceania . Table 1 presents the demographic data for 30 randomly selected countries sourced from the 2007 World Population Data Sheet of the Population Reference Bureau (PRB

Data Observations and Analysis

Demographic Transition States and Geographic Location

The demographic transition model describes the relationship between crude birth rate and death rate in different stages , such as : Stage I (high birth rate , high death rate Stage II (high birth rate , falling death rate Stage III (declining birth rate , relatively low death rate and Stage IV (low birth rate , low death rate (Haupt Kane 2004 ,

. 46-47 . According to Haupt Kane (2004 , a fifth stage exists when fertility falls to a very low level and stays there for a protracted period

Table 2 below categorizes the countries in different demographic transition stages . To identify the demographic transition stage of a country , the birth rates (number of births per 1 ,000 population ) were plotted across countries in descending . As a result , Stage I includes countries with birth rates of 40 or higher , Stage II countries with birth rates from 21 to 34 , and Stage III countries with birth rates from 11 to 18 . Stage IV countries are those with birth rates lower than 11 - these include Russia , Singapore , and Slovenia . This classification is limited to the available data used in this and may not reflect the actual demographic stage of each country

Countries in Different Demographic Transition Stages in 2007

As observed , the countries in a geographical location are in different transition stages . More countries are in stages II and fewer countries in Stages I and IV . Figure 1 provides the map of these countries with their corresponding transition stage color
