POLITICS OF DEVELOPMENT

BACKGROUND

A flood of ink has been spilled on economic , political , and social changes in modern countries . The special attention , however , is focused on those states that have been striving to reach prosperity since the beginning of their existence but each time experienced failure . We would like to take a closer look at such states as Ukraine and Mexico in particular

Ukraine is situated in the eastern part of Europe and has population of approximately 49 million of people . It bs on Romania , Slovakia Poland , Hungary , Byelorussia

, and Russia , and is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov . History of Ukraine traces its roots back to ancient times when it was the capital of powerful and influential Kievan Rus during the 10th and the 11th centuries . The upper crust of Kievan Rus consisted of the Varangians , people of Scandinavian origin . The majority of modern historians consider them the founders of Ukraine . The foremost ruler of Kievan Rus was Volodymyr the Great who was at the head of the state during 980-1015 . The most important contribution that has been made during Kievan Rus times was his decision to convert the Slavic nation into Christianity , which happened in 988 . The thirteenth century was marked by Mongol invasion that resulted in Kievan Rus ' complete disintegration and separation . In a while it has become a member of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth , but remained faithful to its cultural and religious priorities . After the rebellion against the Polish rule in the middle of the seventeenth century , a new country has been created called the Cossack Hetmanate . It lasted for a century and the territory of modern Ukraine was again incorporated to the Russian Empire where all national cultural , social , and political outbursts were repressed and aggressively put down (CIA . Year 1917 when the Communist Party took over the state gave birth to hopes of Ukrainian people who were striving for their independence . However , in 1921 the Soviet Union leadership again conquered Ukraine providing it with degraded chances for future sovereignty . During the period of Ukrainization when Ukrainians were allowed to freely speak their language , establish schools , theaters , and libraries , two famines occurred in 1921-22 and 1932-33 that took around 7-8 million of victims . The Soviet regime has worked out a law according to which Ukrainians had to give up their earnings in the form of wheat being their single livelihood in to follow a five-year plan established by the government .
