At the start of the 17th century , England was successful enough in colonizing areas in the United States . This is partly due to the bloom of English proto-nationalism and national assertiveness because of the threat posed by a possible Spanish invasion , as well as a degree of militarism by the Protestants and the adoration of Queen Elizabeth Despite all of this , the English government made no official attempt to create a colonial empire instead they

The first successful English colony was Jamestown which was established in 1607 near a small river close to Chesapeake Bay . The colonization was a venture financed and coordinated by the London Virginia Company , a stock company whose primary aim is to look for gold . The initial years of the colony has been difficult times , with high death rates because of disease and starvation , as well as wars with local Indians and with very little gold . By the end of 17th century , the export economy was based on tobacco , as richer settlers came into the area to take large portions of land and build their own plantations . The British brought in an estimated 50 ,000 convicts to these colonies . In 1620 , the Plymouth colony was established . New England was originally inhabited by the Puritans , which later on established the Massachusetts Bay Colony around 1630 . On the other hand , the middle colonies which today are the states of New York , New Jersey , Pennsylvania and Delaware all have diverse populations . English settlements were also attempted to be established south of Virginia including the Province of Carolina . The last of the thirteen colonies established was the Georgia colony founded around 1733 . Some of these colonies served as penal settlements from 1620s
