For a long time the police departments have been looking for effective methods to try and improve the process of selection and recruitment of new police officers and one way they are implementing is psychological screening . This requirement is a very difficult attribute to measure . A police department can be held responsible and liable of any pathological action by its member , if it does not assess

the psychological fitness of the member before recruitment

In to avoid such a responsibility , a police department should have a proper program that tests the psychological fitness of a candidate and it should also have evidence showing that it has taken the responsibility of testing for the attribute before recruitment . Such tests therefore should be a mandate in the procedure of hiring officers because they can safe the departments ' embarrassments and money incase a police officer behaves inappropriately (Dantzker , 2005

It should also be a necessity because letting a psychologically disturbed police officer loose with a gun is not the best idea because such individuals can harm themselves as well as others around them Another reason for recruiting psychologically stable officers is because officers need to be emotionally stable but still retain the ability to interact with all sorts of people exhibiting different emotions from anger and hostility to desperation and distress
