Each individual need to have a code of conduct for his personal life , to be successful . The code of conduct highlights an individual 's respect for values , he or she is willing to stand up to , despite adversaries or prospects of gain . Similarly most professions , like business and medicine too have their own code of conduct to bring benefits to the society in which the profession is practiced . The code of conduct is actually ethical codes based on judgment of right and wrong

. Generally most code of conduct is enforced by laws , sometimes by morality . The profession of a police officer is no exception to binding ethics . The police profession gives lots of opportunity for its enforcement officers to carry out responsibilities , with each responsibility having its own implications of ethical conduct . Compared to most other professional ethics , the police ethics are relatively underdeveloped , as many do not agree on the need for police ethics . Actually this is mainly due to the mingling or close association of law and ethics related to police , since police officers are bound by both

The code of conduct for the United Nations Law Enforcement Officials emphasizes a high degree of responsibility to be associated at all times , while carrying out their duties . It also reiterates that their duty should be carried out with a responsibility to protect human dignity and human rights . The conduct codes require resorting to firearms only as an ultimate measure . In such cases too , effort should be taken to avoid the use of firearms on children . The UN code for law enforcement also gives considerable importance for medical help stipulating that medical attention should be given whenever requested or needed . enforcement machinery , it may happen that these medical personnel may sometimes refer the treatment of the person to external personnel outside the enforcement circle (FTC , 1999 . The police officers should accordingly arrange such treatment for the persons , including those injured while violating the law , and the victims of law violations

Enforcement officers have certain rights accorded to them to help them carry out their responsibilities effectively . The idea behind this being that the society could benefit from the officers actions , when supported by the privileged rights . However , when these are misused , it defeats the very purpose for which these were instituted . Thus the society gets harmed rather than served , when these powers are wrongly used . Therefore enforcement officers should understand and respect the logic behind providing them with such powers

The police personnel should be very careful in their relationships ensuring that no relationship be construed as being unfair or bias . They should also refrain from accepting gifts , as gifts need to be reciprocated in whatever capacity it is received . In one sense , gifts are not far from bribes too . Favors generally received by policemen on duty are free rides , refreshments and meals , special low pricing...
