Perhaps one would be looking in a mirror , only to turn around and come face to face with a creature that spells their demise . The feeling of something being there and not being there at the same time gives the whole poem a chilling image . How would one ever know if they were safe from the horrid monsters ? How would one know if they would live another day ? The imagery of this poem puts us in the place of both the monster and the innocent , and lets us see things through both sets

of eyes . The effect is frightening , to say the least

Lastly , I am going to discuss symbolism . The first instance of symbolism is the line , To the world with all its breakable toys ' In context , we can take that to mean that the vampires see their victims as breakable toys ' While the vampires can live forever , the humans and animals that they attack are easily killed and last only for a short time , just as a cheap toy would soon be shattered in the hands of a small child . A life is quickly shattered in the hands of a vampire , and although some may long not to have to shatter another toy ' they have no choice . Another instance of symbolism is the term scorned elixir This is , as we learn in the next line , blood . The poem indicates that it is scorned in two ways . Of course , it is scorned by humans who think it terrible to drink blood , but it is also scorned by the vampires as something that they are hopelessly addicted to with no chance of ever being able to let go . The last bit of symbolism is in the lines , As rock-hollows , tide after tide /Glassily strand the sea ' These lines are a...
