Poetry Analysis

on

Mending Walls

and

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

1 . Based on the Robert Frost 's poem , Mending Wall , answer the question The neighbor likes the saying Good fences make good neighbors , so well that he repeats . Does the speaker also say something twice ? What else suggests that the speaker 's attitude toward the wall is not necessarily Frost 's

Similar to the neighbor 's repetitive statement , the speaker did the same thing in the poem , Mending Wall . Twice mentioned is the line , Something

there is that doesn 't love a wall . It may suggest that the speaker 's mockery on the attitude of the neighbor is opposite of Robert Frost 's . The speaker is not all agreeable in mending the wall every spring , and yet he continues to rebuild it with his neighbor knowing that the latter stands past his father 's saying that by keeping a boundary between the neighbor 's property and his , a good relationship is formed because they keep the hazards away from their neighbors . The speaker jokes on his neighbor 's privacy , but still rebuilds the wall with him to have his own space for himself as well , opposite of the neighbor 's way of life until someone or something breaks it all up again

2 . Based on the Robert Frost 's poem , Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening , answer the question : Although the last two lines are identical they are not read at the same speed . Why the difference ? What is achieved by the repetition

The difference in the last two lines are not only the way it is suppose to be read , but the meaning Robert Frost wants to convey . The speaker in the poem may have been caught up between life and death . There maybe a struggle inside him whether to remain in the snow and be still , or to head on with his journey . It may also suggest that he is not only talking to himself , but also to his horse who is his only companion . By repeating , he reminds himself that though death may come , he has to keep on going . Until he has done all his responsibilities , then he can claim that he has traveled long enough to say he can finally rest
