Given the rise of plagiarism levels , it is necessary to consider the implications it might have for academic integrity in university settings and integrity of the employee and the environment in workplace settings

First of all , it is necessary to provide a clear definition of plagiarism for the purposes of framing the discussion . Office of Research Integrity of the U .S . Plagiarism , just like any other form of academic dishonesty or scientific misconduct , harms the integrity of learning processes . After analyzing the issue of plagiarism from two different ethical perspectives , namely from the point of view of deontological and utilitarian ethics , it becomes evident that it is a very harmful practice

Deontological perspective establishes a moral standard for all human being under all circumstances . From this perspective , any form of scientific misconduct is essentially a wrongdoing

As for utilitarian perspective , it suggests that the rightness of an action fully depends on its consequences , and that the usefulness can be rationally measured . The purpose of any oral or written assignment , both in academic or workplace settings , is to stimulate a learner to acquire new knowledge and skills by means of independent research and critical reflection . This goal is not achieved if plagiarism occurs , thus there are no positive consequences to this action
